History & Geology Day Field Trips

Join the Crested Butte Museum with historian Duane Vandenbusche and geologists Bruce Bartleson and Steve Jenkins as we explore four different areas of Crested Butte and The Gunnison Valley.  All trips include transportation and lunch.  Trips that begin at the museum include a continental breakfast.  Trips that begin at the Almont you can choose to join a roundtable session with Duane prior to departing, where you pay for your own meal.  Below are details for each trip.

July 12th:  The North Country 

This tour will be centered around the history of The North Country: Gold, Coal, Silver, and Flowers.  Topics will include Anthracite (Smith Hill/Cloud City), Oh Be Joyful Campground – early mining town, how it got its name, Poverty Gulch, Hidalgo and Pittsburg, Washington Gulch, Placer Gold Camps, Gothic, Schofield Pass – Town of Schofield, 401, West Maroon Pass, and flowers of the valley.

We meet at the Crested Butte Museum at 8am for a light breakfast (rolls, fruit, coffee).  Duane will go over his topics for the day and we will head out in the van to make stops along the way.  Van transportation will be included with this tour, however, you are welcome to transport yourself if you choose to do so.  A sack-lunch will also be provided with the tour: sandwich, chips or another side, and a drink.  Please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements so we can accommodate your breakfast and lunch.  The tour will end around 2pm.

July 26th:  Taylor Park & Spring Creek: Valley of the Gods

This tour will be centered around the history of Taylor Park and Spring Creek: Valley of the Gods.  Topics will include Bomber Crash in Taylor Canyon, a tour of the Taylor Dam, the Taylor Reservoir, The Silver Camp of Tin Cup, Dorchester (North end of Taylor Park) Star & Enterprise Mines, Deadman’s Gulch, and Spring Creek.

The tour will officially begin at 9am, however you are invited for a roundtable breakfast session with Duane beginning at 8am.  Breakfast is not included in the cost of this ticket, but lunch and transport is included.  Duane will go over his topics for the day during his roundtable session from 8am-9am.  All participants, whether joining for the breakfast roundtable or not, will meet at The Almont Resort at 9am.  At 9am, we will head out in the van to make stops along the way.  Van transportation will be included with this tour, however, you are welcome to transport yourself if you choose to do so.  A sack-lunch will also be provided with the tour: sandwich, chips or another side, and a drink.  Please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements so we can accommodate your breakfast and lunch.  The tour will end around 2pm.

August 9th:  Crested Butte Ski History 

This tour will be centered around the history of skiing in Crested Butte and The Gunnison Valley. Topics will include Rozman Hill, Pioneer Hill at mouth of Cement Creek, Quicks Hill, Lower Loop and Pershing Mine Hill, Chocolate Peak, Gibson Ridge, Red Lady Basin (Mount Emmons), Chicken Ranch, and Crested Butte Mountain Resort.  Please note this is a walking tour around town and a portion of the lower loop and no transportation will be provided or needed for this tour.

We meet at the Crested Butte Museum at 8am for a light breakfast (rolls, fruit, coffee).  Duane will feature a slideshow on the history of skiing in the Gunnison Country and his topics for the day, then we will head out on the walking tour of the area.  A sack-lunch will also be provided with the tour: sandwich, chips or another side, and a drink.  Please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements so we can accommodate your breakfast and lunch.  The tour will end around 2pm.

August 23rd:  Geology of the Black Canyon

This tour will be centered around the geology of the Black Canyon with Bruce Bartleson and Steve Jenkins.

We meet at The Almont at 8am.  A sack-lunch will be provided with the tour: sandwich, chips or another side, and a drink.  Please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements so we can accommodate your breakfast and lunch.  The tour will end around 5pm in Almont.
