What happens to history if there is no one to record, preserve and share it?  
 
From 1982-1993 there was no historical museum in the north end of the Gunnison Valley. Without a museum, there was no place to preserve and share historical artifacts and stories that define, educate and enrich our community. To address this urgent need, local citizens created the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum in 1993.
 
The museum operated in a few different locations over the next decade, before finding its forever home at Tony’s Conoco in 2003, a beloved local landmark and gathering place. Since that time, both the community and the museum have flourished and become beautifully interconnected.  
 
Today, the museum is a town hub where history, ideas and stories are shared in a thoughtful, inclusive and respectful environment. Our ongoing narrative incorporates the influence and contributions of all who left a mark on our community’s rich cultural history. 
 
Our story, much like the story of the Gunnison Valley, is a living breathing narrative. History is continuous, so thankfully our work is never finished. 

We are currently hiring for the following positions:

Executive Director

Job Description:

The mission of the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum is to preserve and share the uniquely diverse cultural history of the Gunnison Valley. We make the past a living part of the future.

● Responsible for the general and fiscal leadership and management of the entire organization, including operations, programs, partnerships, fundraising, budgets, and external relations.
● Charged with delivering on the mission and goals of the organization in a fiscally sound manner.
● Plays a leading role, working closely with the board and staff, in developing and articulating the strategic direction of the Museum and in implementing the resulting strategies and initiatives.

Specific Duties Include:
● Board of Directors—perform all administrative functions associated with board and committee meetings including:
       Scheduling board and committee meetings
       Developing, in conjunction with the board president, the agendas for board meetings
       Creating, collecting and sending out meeting packets in a timely fashion (one week in advance is optimal)
       Attending all board and committee meetings, Working with the board and committees to implement initiatives
       Ensuring that staff attend meetings as needed
       Strategic Planning—in collaboration with the board, develop, update, and implement strategies to enhance the Museum

● Financial Management—responsible for overseeing all financial matters including:
       Creating the annual budget with the board and tracking B2A performance throughout the year
       Recording all financial transactions, including bank deposits and paying bills
       Regularly reviewing the Store account with Store Manager
       Working with accounting professionals on monthly reconciliations, financial reports, payroll, taxes, 990s, financial audits and reviews

● Operations—manage all the operations of the Museum including:
       Building and grounds management, security, visitor safety, maintenance, and preservation
       IT and Risk management
       Creating, updating and ordering supplies
       In conjunction with Store Manager, oversee operation of museum store
       In conjunction with the Curator, preserve, manage and share the Museum’s collections and oversee research and writing opportunities
       In conjunction with Coordinator, oversee events, fundraising and membership efforts
       Oversee occasional facility rentals
       Human Resources
       Hiring, supervising, training, and evaluating staff members, as well as overseeing the work of professional consultants
       Creating and updating job descriptions for staff and interns
       Coordinate Community Service individuals—scheduling, paperwork, compliance training

● Fundraising–work with Museum board and staff to meet the financial needs of the Museum through fundraising efforts including:
       Implement fundraising strategy
       Writing, editing and stewarding grants
        Fundraising events, including securing sponsorships and donations
       Donor cultivation, asks, acknowledgement and stewardship cycle
       Executing fundraising campaigns, including capital campaign, annual fund, etc.

● Membership Management—work with Coordinator to expand membership and maintain all membership documents including:
       Coordinating all membership mailers and emails, including writing physical andelectronic newsletters, thank you letters
       Entering the information into Past Perfect
       Work with Store staff to promote membership to guests

● Events Management—work in collaboration with Coordinator, Museum board and staff to coordinate all aspects of Museum events, including planning, working with contractors, ticket sales, implementation and follow up
● Programming—work with Curator to develop, coordinate, implement and expand educational programming, including:
       School field trips, special programming, and summer camps
       Tours
       Virtual Programming

● External Relations—serve as the Museum’s primary external spokesperson, including interactions with the media, community organizations and local government. Build collaborations with other organizations to promote the mission of the Museum.

● Professional Development–attend appropriate educational functions throughout the year as well as seminars and webinars that are of value to the Museum

Skills Necessary:
Ability to serve as an articulate spokesperson for the Museum.
Team builder with strong interpersonal skills.
Supervisory skills, especially as relevant to paid and volunteer staff and administrative management of an organization.
Experience in development and fundraising, including foundation and government grants as well as corporate and private donations; demonstrated ability to develop partnerships and identify creative solutions.
Financial record-keeping skills and general knowledge of accounting principles.
Familiarity with the following applications: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, PastPerfect, QuickBooks.
Interpersonal and team interaction skills; ability to work with a diverse community and with Board committees.
Ability to lift/move heavy items when moving objects around for events and rentals.

Required Qualifications:  The Executive Director will have a relevant bachelors degree and 3-5 years work in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience, demonstrating ability required to support a non-profit organization and manage a small museum and museum store.

Compensation: This is a full time, salaried position, salary range $50,000-$65,000 DOE, which requires some weekend and evening hours.  3% IRA match, cell phone allowance, Wellness Stipend
