Crested Butte locals Aaron Blunck and David Chodounsky will be competing in the 2018 Winter Olympics this February for Team USA. Both athletes made their Olympic debut’s in the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
Chodounsky graduated from Crested Butte Academy in ’03 and pursued his racing career at Dartmouth College. He will be competing in the men’s slalom.
Blunck’s grandfather Robel Straubhaar is responsible for starting the ski school at the Crested Butte Ski Area and ran it for 34 years. Blunck is the reigning halfpipe world champion and will be looking for a medal in the same event at the 2018 Olympics.
Skiing has always been a part of our local history. Our ski exhibit has an authentic Crested Butte Mountain Resort Gondola, wonderfully restored from the early 1960’s, that is great fun to sit in. See how ski technology, popular ski hills, and ski area branding have changed over the last 100+ years. We also feature some of the earliest snowboards and sit-skis, as well as snowshoes and great photos from the early mining days.
Thanks to Matchstick Productions, there is a temporary exhibit showcasing items from Matchstick’s beginnings in Crested Butte from old cameras to posters. This exhibit is temporary so hurry in before it leaves!
