History in the Making

The 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic, as experienced by the Crested Butte community

Like communities large and small around the world, the people of Crested Butte are living through a once-in-a-generation event. A global pandemic found its way into our home at the end of the road faster and more furiously than anyone expected. Its impacts are already so far reaching—and still we can only speculate as to what the near and distant future holds.

As the staff and board of the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum, we find ourselves simultaneously concerned for our local and global community, while also asking ourselves: how will we tell the story of the COVID-19 pandemic? How do we capture the hope, the heartache, the selflessness, and the soul of how Crested Butte weathered a storm unlike any in its recorded history?

These stories are already being created by you, by all of us, and shared across every possible channel: via posts on social media; during live video happy hours and hangouts; through simple phone calls and messages; through all types of creative expression and community calls to action.

These means of storytelling, creativity, and communication provide the museum with an unprecedented opportunity to capture our history in the making: to crowdsource “living history” from our community as it’s happening. Our goal is to then use those submissions to document this historic event.

Along with content that captures daily life, sights around town and other more obvious examples of the COVID-19 experience, also consider submitting artwork, written stories, poetry, letters or other forms of creative expression.
