Roger Kahn Book Reading from, “How Crested Butte Became a Tourist Town: Drugs, Sex, Sports, Arts, and Social Conflict” @ The Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum
Jul 20 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

“How Crested Butte Became a Tourist Town: Drugs, Sex, Sports, Arts, and Social Conflict” is a fun-filled social history that is based on extensive research including 75 two-six hour interview/conversations with a wide range of “locals” who lived in town from the mid-1960’s through the late ’70’s. Until now, what happened in Crested Butte stayed in Crested Butte, but importantly, what transpired in Crested Butte also occurred in most tourist towns and recreation communities at our nation’s seacoasts, in the mountains, and even in our deserts as they all emerged in the affluent post WWII years. Collectively, they gave rise to our nation’s newest form of cosmopolitan living –the “recreation exurbs.” As such, Crested Butte turned out to be a case study of a much larger phenomena.

Gunnison Walking Tour With David Primus
Jul 27 @ 9:00 am – 10:30 am

David Primus, a local historian, will lead an 1880s walking tour of Gunnison, Colorado. By 1882, Gunnison was booming - it had two railroads, two newspapers, four schools, and six churches. Using the 1882 Bird's Eye View of Gunnison, Dave will help you imagine Gunnison as it was in 1882. The tour will cover both West Gunnison and East Gunnison, two rival towns in the early days. He will point out buildings remaining today, discuss significant sites, and will walk along the routes of the two railroads. Dave specializes in researching the more obscure details of history - you will learn things you never knew before!  Meet at 114 N. Boulevard at 9am. You may park in the lot. Tour is $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Reserve your spot by visiting crestedbuttemuseum.com or by calling 970-349-1880.
