Last Friday, our hard-working, dedicated Museum Director, Shelley Popke accepted a well-deserved award from History Colorado, the 2020 Hart Award for historic preservation. History Colorado created a documentary to showcase the Museum and explain why its restoration was so important for our state. Hear Shelley talk about the building’s history and the Museum’s desire to keep it looking the way it did when Tony’s Conoco closed in 1996. Also, learn how she took on the massive project of preserving a building built in 1883 and what it took to make it all happen. Duane Vandenbusche Ed.D. is also featured in the documentary discussing the previous owner of the building, Tony Mihelich and why he himself, along with the Conoco Store he operated within its walls for 56 years were so important to the community. He tells us, “The building has made everybody in Crested Butte and the Gunnison Valley proud.”
