History of Skiing in the Butte

Like our Steep and Deep?

All eyes were on Aaron Blunck, a Crested Butte local, as he navigated the free skiing competitions all over the world and then landed a spot on the 2014 Olympic team that went to Sochi, Russia.   Did you know his grandfather, Robel Straubhaar, started the ski school at the Crested Butte ski area? Robel worked at that position for 34 years.  Another local, David Chodusky, also represented the U.S. in the 2014 Olympic and is currently placed first in the world.

Skiing has always been a part of our local history. Our ski exhibit has an authentic Crested Butte Mountain Resort Gondola, wonderfully restored from the early 1960’s, that is great fun to sit in. See how ski technology, popular ski hills and ski area branding have changed over the last 100+ years.  We also feature some of the earliest snowboards and sit skis, as well as snowshoes and great photos from the early mining days.
